CHART CORRECTIONS
OCEAN CHARTING SERVICES’ business is the weekly correcting of paper charts for the marine industry.
The updates originate at NOAA
which currently is the sole provider of official U.S. Government
electronic chart data.
These updates are often voluminous. Some charts are altered as
much as 300 times a year. Our customers chart inventories range from 3 charts to over 380.
Logging thousands of changes by hand
on board vessels over the course of a year is time consuming, unwieldy, and can result in valuable information obscured with
pen and pencil scratch, and erasures.
Every week, OCS sends a packet to customers that include NOAA
corrections for every chart aboard ship. These corrections are
visual: detailed chart segments – “chartlets” – printed to exact scale on sticky-back paper.
They are then cut out, peeled off, and applied directly to the charts. Just line up geographic
or cartographic features, be it contour lines or latitude and longitude lines, and
apply the chartlet. Your chart is now up to date.
